The Apthorp

Manhattan is home to some of the most beautiful apartment buildings, many of which are historical landmarks. One of my all time favorite apartment houses in the city is The Apthorp because of its stunning Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, but what is most captivating about the building the center courtyard that is only accessible through a tunnel-like drive with a barrel-vaulted ceiling that is guarded with an impenetrable-looking wrought iron gate. The building was once the largest apartment building in the world, but has been quickly been surpassed in size, but not original detail. Each apartment has a completely different floorplan, making no two apartments the same. The generous units make for a really luxe space. The building was recently bought by a developer making all of the units into condos, quietly renovating each apartment, updating the features, but still keeping the historical integrity. The Apthorp is a gorgeous building, in a gorgeous city, and will hopefully continue to live on.
