Person of Interest: Glenn O'Brien

I began the week idolizing someone, so why not end it the same way? Continuity is my favorite. Andre Balazs was discussed on Monday, leaving Glenn O'Brien for today. Mr. O'Brien is most widely known as the "The Style Guy" in GQ Magazine, which is his monthly column that dishes out advice for the sartorially challenged readers of the magazine. The wit that Mr. O'Brien pushes out is outstandingly dry, all the while educational and wise. Having started in journalism while working for Andy Warhol at Interview Magazine, he became quite the man about town in the publishing world. His sharp tongue, strong style, and seemingly careless attitude of what 'men should do' is pretty inspiring. And he knows it. Given his strong following from GQ and its readers, he recently published a book. How to Be a Man, "a guide to style and behavior for the modern gentleman." If you're a man, and you haven't read it, I'd rethink your schedule today and peruse the insightful piece of philosophy / advise / how-to book.

Hainey & Cundiff: New York City

Michael Hainey and Brooke Cundiff may be the coolest couple in New York. Mr. Hainey being a writer and editor for GQ Magazine, while Miss Cundiff is the Director of Merchandise for Park & Bond (one of the coolest/newest stores/blogs online). The couple live together in this tastefully obscure apartment in Manhattan, with stacks of books everywhere, and artwork filling the walls, this apartment is easily identified as home to some pretty chic people. They have quite the knack for mixing old with new, and luxe with vintage. One of my favorite things is the antique velvet-upholstered chair with a piece of Vuitton luggage stored underneath it, sitting next to a pair of worn Bean boots. The whole look of the apartment seems unforced, and just really what's best for the couple. Another cork of the apartment which would make any girl swoon is the black and gold antique cabinet in the couple's bedroom, that would most likely be used for storing china, but is actually put to good use by being the home of Miss Cundiff's shoe collection, pretty glamourous and practical, if you ask me.

Cherishing Chambray

This spring GQ Magazine named it the shirt of the summer, J. Crew has perfected it... and I own three or four. The old school chambray button down is as classic as a guy (or girl) can get, and I have come to realize the denim shirts are easy to wear, and can be worn with just about everything. Matching it with a dark or light colored blazer, wearing it with jeans, or even adding some flair to it with a tie or bowtie, will make that chambray shirt look like you've been wearing them since Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke (see below). And don't feel like your stuck with a blue shirt when wearing chambray, the material also comes in different reds and pinks along with black. Take my advice, buy one if you don't already have one. And it's a style for both genders, the last photo is Ashely Olsen sporting black jeans and a light-washed chambray shirt with a nice number of unfastened buttons (wink).

The Style Guy at Home

GQ magazine’s Glenn O’Brien makes a home with his wife Gina and their son, Oscar, in Litchfield, Connecticut, and the house has just as much style as Mr. O’Brien. The mid-century modern house is rather large and very open, with a huge amount of space to entertain. I especially love the expansive windows in most of the rooms, they really give a feel of serenity from the outside. Another thing I love about the windows are the shelves underneath in the living rooms. The shelves are filled with books, which gives the space a very comfortable feel. The house is also filled with different ceramics that Gina collects, which gives the house an unexpected pop of color. Another burst of color is found in the family room with the orange couches, in a style that is like a formed bean-bag chair… very cool.
